As a fishing guide on Table Rock Lake, I spend many sunny days out on the water. Having just gone through skin cancer surgery, protecting myself from the sun’s damaging rays is a priority for me these days, and should be for everyone. According to my doctor, the cancer I had probably came from sun damage I incurred as a child. Using sunscreen on youngsters is especially important. We all want our kids or grandkids to get outdoors to play and enjoy nature. As those youngsters enjoy playing in the sun, be sure they have adequate sun protection!
That goes for you anglers as well! The good news is that by using high-SPF sunscreen, keeping your head and hands protected and wearing protective clothing, skin cancer is very preventable.
For you guys out there who have resisted using sunscreen because you didn’t like the smell or that greasy feeling on your face, I was the same way at one time. But I now use a product my wife found for me made by Rodan and Fields – an SPF 50 that is not oily and is odor-free. It’s a little more expensive than what you find at the discount stores, but it’s the one I use since it definitely works and I’m not put off by the smell or feel. So friends, get out in the sun and enjoy fishing and other outdoor fun, but be sure to protect your skin!
